The silk roads connected China to Europe and gave rise to powerful empires along the trade routes. Women were sold in marriages to unite kingdoms. They also labored in the markets and were the primary manufacturers of silk, from which the roads get their name. Learn more.

The Mongol Empire was the largest in world history, but short lived. It was unique because it expanded quickly due to the organizational work of many women and adopted or tolerated local customs wherever it conquered. Learn more.

After the decline of the Mongols, Central Asia saw the rise of the he Russian Empire, later the Soviet Union, then the Russian Federation. These empires had huge impacts on women's lives.
