Important influences on different women's lives:

• Class: one's wealth and status in society
• Race: the interactions between native, Europeans, and African peoples kidnapped and brought to South America created a unique racial dynamic.

Native Cultures:
Before contact with Europeans, South American women had a unique and different role in society. The Aztec and Inca worshipped female goddesses and had gendered rituals. Lean more. 

European Conquest:
When Europeans arrived it turned gender dynamics on their head. Many native women found themselves married off to Europeans to create peace, but also because of unequal power dynamics and too few European women traveling to the Americas. Learn more.

By 1900 almost all Latin American countries were independent from Spain and Portugal. These revolutions transformed women's lives.
