Current Events

Suggested Resources
The primary objective of this project is to support and empower teachers to teach about current events through a gendered lens. Men have had millennia to craft the norms in every industry. In journalism, this is no different. Let's retrain ourselves to seek stories written by and about women.

By highlighting the voices and perspectives of women writers in the media, this initiative aims to enrich classroom discussions, promote diversity, and offer students a more inclusive understanding of the world.

News by Women

Our team recommends these sources for news on women and gender. These sources have female reporters and editorial teams and thus bring a different direction and angle to their reporting than traditional newsrooms.

Questioning Strategies

The source of your news matters. Think critically about whom you are reading from before you decide to close read. For every news story, ask yourself these questions:

  • Sourcing:

    • Who is the author of this article? What background and biases may they have?

    • What newspaper does this come from? Are they considered reliable?

    • Does this source and paper have credibility in the issue at hand? Consider factors like whether their reporters are on the scene and speak the language.

  • Context:

    • How much time has passed? Has there been enough time for the accurate collection of information?

    • Does the source reference first-hand (primary) accounts from witnesses?

  • Close Reading:

    • What position, if any, does this story take on the issue being reported?
