A game by the Remedial Herstory Project

The Remedial Herstory Project is a nonprofit dedicated to getting women’s history into history classes. They make free learning resources like textbooks, media, inquiry-based lesson plans, and yes... games... so that there is no excuse not to know your herstory.

A special thank you to Kelsie Brook Eckert for developing this game.

Are You a HERstorian? Rule Book

Objective: to become the ultimate HERstorian by answering women's history questions correctly and being the first to reach the end of the board!

What’s in the Box

  • Game board
  • Die
  • Question Cards
  • Herstorian Tokens (4)
  • Herstory Maker Tokens (4)
  • Rulebook (this)

Set-Up

  • Place the game board in the center.
  • Shuffle the question cards and place them in the draw pile.
  • Place the die nearby.
  • Each player selects a token and places it on the Start space.
  • The youngest goes first. Play proceeds clockwise.

Game Play

  • Roll the die to determine the question category.
  • The player to the left draws the top card from the pile.
  • They find the question matching the category rolled and read it aloud.
  • Answer the question to the best of your ability.
  • If you’re correct, move forward one space on the board.
  • If you’re incorrect, stay where you are. No penalties.
  • Play passes to the next player (to your left).

Herstory Maker Tokens

On another players turn, any player can play a “Herstory Maker” token (discs). This token allows the player to take a guess on the answer after the player whose turn it is takes a guess.

  • If they play the token before the category is rolled, they risk advancing or retreating 1 space.
  • If they play the token after the category is rolled, they risk advancing or retreating 5 spaces.

Only one player can play a HERstory Maker token per turn, it’s a race to play the token first.

Winning the Game

The first player to reach the last space on the board is officially a Herstory Buff!

Notes & Variations

Tie? If two players reach the end on the same round, they both win—or have a final face-off with one last question each!

Collaborative? Play in teams! Perfect for classrooms or game night.

*It’s important to us that you know fake history when you see it. The board has an AI generated image of Queen Nzinga, Nur Jahan, Susan B. Anthony, Ban Zhao, and Queen Liliuokalani flexing their buff muscles. Are you a Herstory buff too?
