In 2022, the Remedial Herstory Project (RHP) won a major grant from the Library of Congress with Primary Sources Eastern Region Program, coordinated by Waynesburg University. This grant allowed us to build 55 or more inquiry-based lesson plans for secondary students on women's history using Library of Congress and other primary resources. All our lessons follow the inquiry model and are driven by primary analysis where students learn to DO historical analysis.
When the RHP began building lesson plans in 2020, we started by exploring what was already out there on the internet and providing links to these tools on our website. Most of the resources we found were biographies of important women. Our criteria were resources that were freely available online and involved primary source reading. We feel that to engage students in the learning process, the lesson should be driven by a debatable, researchable, and important question. Preparing students to investigate and practice the skills of a historian and to draw conclusions, brings greater understanding and develops critical thinking skills. Each RHP lesson is driven by an “inquiry” or a question and the students consult provided sources to pursue that inquiry.
RHP lesson plans meet the Eckert Test, a term coined in our founder's TEDx Talk. The Eckert Test requires that all lesson plans include two or more women or women’s groups, from differing backgrounds, who disagree in some way.
RHP has also won smaller grants from the New Hampshire Women's Foundation, the South Carolina Humanities, the Vermont Humanities, the New Hampshire Humanities, the New Hampshire Council for the Social Studies, the Annalee Thorndike Foundation, and an anonymous donor at the Rhode Island Community Fund.
