Did the purdah system hold women in South Asia back?
In this inquiry, students will read about the cultural practice of the Purdah, that includes the seclusion of women from public observation by wearing concealing clothing from head to toe and by the use of high walls, curtains, and screens erected within the home. Purdah is practiced by Muslims and by various groups of Hindus, especially in India. Students will read excerpts from Rokeya Sakhawat Hossin, Shaista Suhrawrdy Ikramulla, and Saleni Armstrong-Hopkins. Included with this item is: the lesson plan, a modified version of said lesson plan at the middle school level, a lesson specific powerpoint, as well as two teacher resources which help answer each lesson plan.
