How powerful were Queens in premodern Africa?
In this inquiry, students will examine how some women—often coming from matrilineal communities that had existed for hundreds if not thousands of years beforehand, maintained positions of leadership and respect as queens. In parts one and two, this inquiry asks you to consider why, in spite of slavery and colonization, there were so many queens in early modern Africa. In the third and final section, consider their legacies in the modern world. Included with this item is: the lesson plan, a modified version of said lesson plan at the middle school level, a lesson specific powerpoint, as well as two teacher resources which help answer each lesson plan. If you modify any of the materials please feel free to send them back to us, so we can see where you made changes.
